Honeywell (Nasdaq: HON) and Analog Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: ADI) announced the signing of a memorandum of cooperation during the 2024 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), aimed at exploring innovative changes in commercial building digitization without the need to replace existing wiring by upgrading digital connectivity technology, to help reduce costs, avoid waste, and reduce downtime. This strategic collaboration is the first to introduce digital connectivity technology into building management systems.

Many commercial buildings in the United States are outdated and inefficient, and according to data from the US Energy Information Agency (EIA), most of them were built before 2000. In addition, as enterprises rely on network technology to transmit data and the amount of data transmitted is increasing, this has led to a surge in demand for cloud storage and processing speed. The digitization of building management systems will enable managers to make real-time decisions to reduce energy consumption and upgrade the network performance and security of buildings to the current Internet protocol network, without the need to pay the high cost of large-scale renovations.

Martin Cotter, Senior Vice President of ADI Industry and Multi Market Business and Regional President of ADI EMEA, said, “For over a decade, ADI and Honeywell have worked together to drive waves of innovation. In a new round of cooperation, we are delighted to see that ADI technology will not only be applied in the field of factory automation, but also enter Honeywell’s building management system to help customers reduce building energy consumption, save funds, improve adaptability, and help achieve emission reduction goals.”

Honeywell’s Chief Technology Officer, Suresh Venkatarayalu, said, “Honeywell is innovating its building management system to help building owners cope with today’s severe challenges. Collaborating with ADI will allow building owners to upgrade and optimize existing wiring without investing huge amounts of money, saving labor costs and reducing environmental impact.”

Honeywell plans to adopt ADI’s T1L single pair Ethernet and software configurable input/output (SWIO) solution in its building management system. ADI’s single pair Ethernet supports long-distance Ethernet connections, which can reuse existing wiring in buildings, reducing installation time and cost, and avoiding waste. Meanwhile, a single pair of Ethernet can effectively supplement the existing Ethernet connections in building management systems, enhance the connection from the edge to the cloud, help eliminate data silos, and better utilize assets.

ADI’s solution also enables Honeywell to create single version products tailored to different needs, reducing product complexity and enabling more futuristic control and automation solutions to adapt to potential building renovations or demand changes in the future. This helps to improve product installation speed, reduce inventory demand, and make replacement and adjustment more economical and convenient.
