151X1235DB15NP03 EX2100e excitation control regulator system is GE’s latest advanced control system for steam, gas or hydroelectric generators, suitable for new units and modified units. Control hardware and software design are closely coordinated with GE’s system and control engineering to ensure a true system solution. Integration between the excitation control system, turbine control system, static start control system, integrated control system (ICS) and human machine interface (HMI) is seamless. For stand-alone retrofit applications, integration with the customer’s distributed control system (DCS) is supported via serial or Modbus® Ethernet. This document is specifically for the application of the 35 A and 120 A (nominal) series EX2100e control regulator systems.

  Control Hardware

The 151X1235DB15NP03 EX2100e regulator system is available in multiple configurations to provide control flexibility for thyristor and regulator systems. For small regulator systems, two pulse width modulation (PWM) power converter modules use insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) to provide up to 35 A or 120 A nominal output. These systems can support the following applications:

• Saturated current transformer/power voltage transformer (SCT/PPT) regulators

• Brushless exciter regulators

• Direct current (dc) rotary exciter regulators

In SCT/PPT regulator and dc rotary exciter regulator applications, the EX2100e regulator system can reduce the effects of exciter time constants. It combines direct measurement of the generator excitation voltage and excitation current to improve response to system transients.

The architecture is a single control with a single power control module (PCM) or dual control with dual PCMs, and includes a customer interface subsystem, optional diagnostic local operator interface (touch screen), optional control operator interface (COI) remote touch screen interface, control power input module, and PCM. The PCM consists of a bridge interface subsystem, power bridge, optional AC and DC filtering networks, and AC (ac) and/or DC isolation devices. To expand input and output (I/O) capabilities, VersaMax® or Mark* VIe Control IONet I/O modules can be added.

  The EX2100e regulator system supports Ethernet LAN communications with:

Turbine control and ICS, HMI, Proficy*-based historian, Programming Interface (PI)-based historian, On-Site Monitoring System (OSM), and COI

• Expansion I/O modules using Ethernet Global Data (EGD) protocol

• Customer DCS via Ethernet or Modbus Ethernet Remote Terminal Unit (RTU)

• ToolboxST* application

• GE Field Support* for monitoring and diagnostics

The 151X1235DB15NP03 EX2100e excitation controller provides a regulator control system in an 800 mm (32 in) enclosure with supporting hardware depending on the specific application. Other packaging options are available. The regulator system can be purchased as part of a finished cabinet or the individual components can be shipped separately for field installation to better meet the needs of retrofit applications.

The power conversion consists of the input section, DC link, and converter output section. The input section is a three-phase diode bridge with input filter. The system accepts a primary AC input range of 90 to 280 V rms nominal for 35 A systems and up to 480 V rms for 120 A systems. The AC input is 480 Hz (maximum) and can be supplied in single or three phase from a permanent magnet generator (PMG), auxiliary bus, or generator terminals.

As a backup power source, the system accepts a secondary power input (nominal 125 to 250 V DC) from a DC battery bank. The DC secondary inputs are diode isolated and combined with the three-phase diode bridge outputs. These power the DC link, which is an unregulated supply voltage that controls the output power through IGBTs. A dynamic discharge (DD) circuit limits the DC link voltage level during events such as load rejection or unit tripping.

The converter output section uses IGBTs to pulse width modulate the DC link source voltage to its final value. The chopping frequency of the IGBTs is approximately 1,000 Hz. This output is fed to the exciter field as a regulated voltage or current. An output shunt monitors the excitation current. Continuous DC output up to 100% of rated value is provided, with temporary forcing capability up to 210%. The regulated output flows to the exciter field through a DC contactor.

The EX2100e regulator system consists of interface boards that are interconnected via a high-speed serial link (HSSL) and connected to their associated I/O terminal boards.
