Stressometer Flatness Control – the unsurpassed way to become more competitive
The Stressometer System is since more than 50 years recognized as the world standard in flatness measurement and control in flat rolling mills. Based on our experience from more than 1200 installations the Stressometer System provides the advanced automated control system needed to produce the high quality flat strip demanded by producers.
Millmate Strip Scanner Systems – position and width measurement
One of the most important parameters to measure in a rolling mill are the position and the width of the strip. If these are accurately determined, the strip can be guided in a correct and consistent lateral position in the mill and the roll actuators can be adjusted to reach the target flatness. Furthermore, edge trimming can be reduced to a minimum, and strip breakage due to over-stressed edges can be eliminated. Millmate Strip Scanner system is widely used to measure strip edge position, off-center and strip width in rolling mills as well as in processing lines.
Large PillowBlock Tensiometers – Strip tension measurement
One of the crucial parameters in achieving correct strip thickness during hot and cold rolling is the strip tension. In order to reach the highest possible accuracy, a strip tensiometer is the best and most reliable alternative. It keeps the strip tension constant within the desired range, during both acceleration and deceleration. The Millmate Strip Tensiometer System consists of a Millmate Controller 400, a junction box and two load cells matched to the desired measuring range. The load cells are available for measurement in two different directions, one for vertical measurement and the other for horizontal measurement.
Millmate Roll Force Systems – Roll force measurement
A truly measured roll force is crucial in achieving correct roll gap settings, true force distribution from operator side to drive side of your mill and supervision of the backup bearings and roll eccentricity. The Millmate Roll Force System incorporates all three essential features. The Millmate Roll Force System consists of a Millmate Controller 400 and two load cells with matching units. The various types and the wide load range of the Millmate Roll Force load cells cover practically all conceivable force measurement applications.
The ABB circular load cells are installed under the mill screw and they have been running very well for many years of operation. We are very satisfied with the performance of the Millmate Roll Force systems.
SSAB Oxelösund AB is a member of the SSAB Swedish Steel Group and is the largest Nordic manufacturer of heavy steel plate. The company is also a world leader in the specialist field of quenched and tempered steels, and produces well-known brand names such as HARDOX and WELDOX. SSAB Oxelösund is the only steelwork in Sweden to have an entire production line stretching from raw materials to rolled plate. SSAB produces around 600 ktons heavy plate (2006), and 90 percent of the production is exported. Germany is the biggest single export market. SSAB has extensive stocks in more than 40 countries around the world.
What has been achieved?
We ask Mr. Thord Thorslund, Production Manager Plate Rolling Department, about the Millmate Roll Force System installation:
”There have been no problems with the ABB load cells since they were installed 12 years ago. At that time the SSAB plate mill was considered the most high-powered rolling mill in the world. Over the years more than 10 million passes have been rolled and every pass with a roll force of 10,000 tons. At SSAB we have a lot of ABB equipment installed and this was also a reason for choosing Pressductor load cells. For us it is very important to have confidence in suppliers of vital production equipment. At SSAB we do not have all the knowledge and competence in-house and we feel secure working with ABB as a supplier.” Mr. Hans Devell, maintenance Technician Heavy Plate Mill and Mr. Bo Persson, Maintenance Department Rolling Mill concordantly express their opinion about the Millmate Roll Force System installation: ”The ABB load cells have been running very well without problems for all these years. The most important issue for us is that the load cells have stable and equal measurements on both drive and operator sides. And the ABB Pressductor load cells have fulfilled the requirements
In order to carry through pro-active maintenance we will have the present load cells checked and serviced to avoid possible future problems. We are planning on having two sets of load cells in order to keep the standstill time to an absolute minimum level. We have big confidence in ABB as a supplier of load cells. Also by knowing that technical competence and expertise is just a phone call away we feel very secure working with ABB.”
ABB strip tension load cells in processing lines
The production of cold rolled stainless steel coils from hot strip today typically consists of a series of separate processes: annealing, pickling, cold rolling and skin pass rolling. Outokumpu’s line in Tornio Finland, supplied by Danieli, is the latest alternative to the market evolution by introducing new technologies for stainless steel within one integrated processing line.
The RAP 5 line (Rolling-Annealing-Pickling) incorporates all the processes in a continuous line: tandem cold rolling mill, annealing furnace, pickling section, skin pass mill. This world-first integrated line can process both hot and cold rolled stainless steel strips. The cold rolling plants in Tornio produce stainless steel sheet and coil, most of which is sold to customers in Europe and Asia.
Tension control is one of the most important process parameters in strip processing lines. In order to achieve good tension control you need reliable input of the actual tension. Therefore the selection of reliable tension load cells is crucial. For Outokumpu the choice stood between Pressductor technology and strain gauge technology. In a thorough evaluation Outokumpu pointed out the extensive experience of using Pressductor load cells in other applications. In addition, the good long-term relations with ABB including reliable technical and local support made Outokumpu choose the Pressductor alternative.
In the RAP 5 line, one of the world’s largest process lines, there are totally 28 ABB strip tension systems (56 Pressductor PillowBlock load cells) installed, from the rolling section to the tension leveling and skin pass mill sections. ABB and its Pressductor load cells fully take care of the strip tension measurement in the line.
ABB’s high performance load cells are based on the unique Pressductor technology principle, patented in 1954. The ABB PillowBlock type of load cells has proven their outstanding dependability in demanding strip tension measurement applications in both rolling mills and processing lines. The furnace sections, always with high temperatures, are another important and demanding application where ABB PillowBlock load cells have been evaluated as the best solution.
In a comparison between Pressductor load cells and strain gauge tension load cells, there are several benefits with the Pressductor Technology. ABB’s Pressductor load cells stand for accurate and reliable measurement with:
• No need for constant re-calibrations
• No need to re-zeroing due to zero drift
• Wide measurement range
• Extremely long service life
In total, there are 28 ABB strip tension systems (56 Pressductor PillowBlock load cells) installed in the RAP 5 line. The scope of supply consists of:
Load cell types Capacity
PFTL 201C 20 kN, 50 kN
PFCL 201C 20 kN, 50 kN
PFTL 201D 100 kN
