Description

Transformers are key and expensive components of the electrical grid and knowledge of their health condition is essential to having a reliable network. When a transformer’s insulation system is overstressed, gases are produced that dissolve in the oil. Dissolved Gas-in-oil Analysis (DGA) is recognized as the best indicator of developing faults. The Hydran™ M2 is a continuous on-line dissolved gas and moisture in oil monitoring device that alerts personnel of developing fault conditions in their transformer. It provides key monitoring information and minimizes the risk of unplanned outages. Through the connection of additional sensors (for example top and bottom tank oil temperature, transformer load or ambient temperature), additional information can be captured and used to correlate with DGA and moisture values for a more in-depth analysis of the transformer’s condition. This wealth of data can,

not only be transmitted raw using the M2’s wide range of communication options but can also be converted into useful information through the on-board calculation of IEEE® standard’s based transformer mathematical models in order to provide further condition information. Key Benefits • Continually measures dissolved fault gases and moisture in oil for early identifications of potential issues before they become critical transformer failures • Extend monitoring capabilities using additional sensors (for load, oil temperature) and built-in calculation of transformer models based on IEEE standard • Wide range of communication options and protocols (including IEC® 61850) simplifying integration into SCADA or DCS systems • Third generation of this proven design, with very large global installed base • Supports new lower flammability ester based oils as well as mineral transformer insulation oils

Transformer Models The Hydran M2 offers transformer mathematical models based on IEEE standards and correlated with field experience. They use inputs from the available sensors and transform the received data into useful real time information to further understand the overall health of the transformer. Possible models output examples: • Estimated winding hot spot temperature • Moisture level in paper • Moisture bubbling temperature • Insulation ageing • Overloading capacity • Cooling efficiency • OLTC temperature differential

The Hydran M2 is a compact permanently mounted on-line transformer monitoring device that will alert personnel to developing fault conditions. It continuously monitors a composite value of various fault gases (in ppm) or a Hydrogen gas only value (depending on sensor purchased). In addition it tracks moisture in oil (reading in %RH and ppm).

With additional sensors added, the Hydran M2 can also compute transformer mathematical models based on IEEE® and IEC® standards to provide further information on the performance of the transformer.

The Hydran M2-X is the next generation of the field-proven family of Hydran DGA monitoring solutions, providing continuous monitoring of gas and moisture levels to alert users of developing faults and minimize the risk of unplanned outages. The M2-X builds on GE’s strong domain expertise to deliver an optimized, low maintenance monitoring device with extended sensor life.

The Hydran M2-X is also available in a UL certified, HazLoc version (part number: M2-X-HZ) for installation on transformers located in hazardous locations designated as Class I, Division 2

The Hydran sensors are available as a traditional Hydran composite gas (H2, CO, C2H2, C2H4) sensor or a discrete Hydrogen only (H2) sensor. In addition, it tracks moisture in oil (reading in %RH and ppm) and is compatible with various transformer oil types (standard mineral insulating oils and newer natural and synthetic ester based fluids).

Key Benefits

Small form factor, no moving parts, and low maintenance

Support for Asset Performance Management (APM) software analytics, enabling fleet level deployments

Condition monitoring for transformers with mineral insulating oils or ester based fluids (natural and synthetic)

Extending beyond DGA monitoring, through the connection of sensors, the Hydran M2-X can monitor other parameters such as top oil temperature, load current and through the use of IEEE based mathematical models, can provide further insight on changing transformer conditions

Provides critical data for APM strategies, facilitating planning of site intervention and maintenance activities

The M2-X-HZ version is certified for hazardous locations where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, vapors or liquids are not likely to exist under normal operating conditions but where the risk still exists.

Features

Easily upgradeable in the field to accept analog signals and monitor other key transformer parameters

Computation of winding hot spot and other IEEE transformer models for enhanced diagnostics of the transformer’s condition (depending on sensors installed)
