  Introduction

The VMIVME-7740 of VMIC is a complete computer based on the Pentium III processor, with the additional benefits of a single Eurocard structure and full compatibility with the VMEbus specification revision C.1. VMIVME-7740, with advanced VMEbus interface and dual port to VMEbus RAM, is an ideal choice for multiprocessor applications.

A single CPU board is used as a standard PC/AT, performs a PC/AT type power on self-test, and then starts MS-DOS, Windows 95, Windows NT, or any other PC compatible operating system. The standard PC features of VMIVME-7740 include those described in Chapter 3 of this manual. VMIVME-7740 also operates as a VME bus controller and can be accessed as a VMEbus slave through onboard PCI to VMEbus bridge and Endian conversion hardware with other VMEbus modules. The functions of VMEbus can be obtained through programming the PCI to VMEbus bridge of VMIVME-7740, which is available in this volume and/or specifically for optional PCI to VMEbus interface boards, titled: VMIVME-7740 Tundra Universe

Based on II ™ VMEbus interface product manual (document number 500-007740-001). In this manual, all references to Universe II refer to Universe IIB. The VMIVME-7740 programmer can quickly and easily control all VME buses by linking them to the VMEbus interrupt and control function library to achieve functionality.

This library can be used in conjunction with VMIC’s VMISFT-9420 IOWorks Access software for Windows NT users. VMIVME-7740 also offers SBC compatibility beyond typical PC/AT, including a universal timer, programmable Watchdog Timer, a bootable flash drive system, and non-volatile SRAM. These features make the unit an ideal choice for embedded applications.

  VMIVME-7740 Product Options

The VMIVME-7740 of VMIC is built around three basic hardware configurations.

These factors include processor performance, flash memory, and SDRAM memory size.

These options may change based on the availability of emerging technologies and suppliers

  Configuration.

The available options and current detailed information for VMIVME-7740 are defined in

The equipment specification sheet can be obtained from your VMIC representative.

The following steps describe the methods recommended by VMIC

  VMIVME-7740 installation and power on:

1. Ensure that the device power is turned off.

2. Select the chassis slot. VMIVME-7740 must be connected to the dual P1/P2VME bus backplane. If VMIVME-7740 is to be used as a VMEbus system controller, please select the first VMEbus slot. If the VMEbus system controller is a different board, please select any slot except. VMIVME-7740 does not require a jumper to enable/disable system controller functionality.

Note: VMIVME-7740 requires forced air cooling. It is recommended to install a panel on any exposed VMEbus slot with a blank. This will allow air to flow through the VMIVME-7740 board. For a 20 slot VME configuration, three 100 CFM fans are recommended.

3. Insert VMIVME-7740 and its connected expansion modules into the selected VMEbus chassis slot (expansion modules should immediately fill the slot adjacent to VMIVME-7740). At the same time, ensure that the board is correctly aligned and oriented in the support plate guide rail, and smoothly slide the board forward against the mating connector until it is firmly seated.

4. Connect all required peripheral devices to the front panel. Each connector is clearly marked on the front panel, and detailed pins are provided in Appendix A. At least if the user has not previously configured it, a keyboard and monitor system are required.

5. Power on the system. Several messages are displayed on the screen, including the names, versions, and copyright dates of various BIOS modules VMIVME-7740.

There is an optional flash drive on the board of VMIVME-7740. Chapter 4 is about setting details.

If an external drive module is installed, the BIOS setup program must be run to configure the drive type. Please refer to Appendix C for proper system configuration.

8. If there is a driver module, please follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installing the operating system. For instructions on installing VMIVME-7740 peripheral drivers, please refer to Appendix B for software during operating system installation. The BIOS setup VMIVME-7740 has an onboard BIOS setup program that can control many configuration options. These options are stored in a special non-volatile memory, with battery supported storage chips collectively referred to as the board’s “CMOS” configuration. CMOS configuration controls the hardware’s behavior from the moment power is applied. VMIVME-7740 does not have a hard drive CMOS configured in the factory. You must run the BIOS setup program to configure specific drive attachments. The detailed information of the VMIVME-7740 BIOS setup program is included in Appendix C. The detailed definition of the front panel connection of the front panel connector, including connector pins and orientation VMIVME-7740, can be found in Appendix A. The PMC extension site connector VMIVME-7740 provides a PMC extension site connector for adding PMC extension boards. This extension allows third-party devices to connect with VMIVME-7740, as shown in Figure 2-2.

VMIVME-7740 provides a complete Pentium III compatible with IBM PC/AT

A processor based computer. This design includes a high-speed microprocessor with current technology memory. You can refer to the component options in the VMIC product specifications. Due to its compatibility with PC/AT, this design retains standard PC memory and I/O mapping, as well as standard interrupt architecture. In addition, VMIVME-7740 includes an Ethernet controller, AGP compatible video adapter, and USB controller. The following section provides a detailed introduction to the PC/AT functions of VMIVME-7740

  Physical memory

VMIVME-7740 provides synchronous DRAM (SDRAM) as onboard system memory that can be accessed in bytes, words, or long words. All RAM on VMIVME-7740 is connected to the VME bridge via PCI. Memory can be provided by the local processor and the VMEbus slave interface by another VMEbus host. When sharing memory between the local processor and VMEbus to prevent VMEbusmaster from overwriting the operating system of the local processor.

Note: When using the I/O Works Access configuration utility in Windows NT 4.0, it is necessary to configure RAM and do not request more than 25% of physical RAM. Exceeding the 25% limit may result in known Windows NT errors. This may result in unpredictable behavior during the Windows NT boot sequence, requiring

Use the emergency repair disk to restore your computer. This error exists in Windows NT 4.0 service pack level 3. It is recommended to perform an emergency repair to keep the disk up-to-date and easy to access.

VMIVME-7740 includes a single flash device for system BIOS, video BIOS, and LANWorks BIOS. The VMIVME-7740 memory includes 32 KB of non-volatile static RAM (NVRAM) with addresses ranging from $D8000 to $DFFFF. Except for the first 24 bytes, all bytes are accessible. Bytes $D8000- $D800D are used by the watchdog controller and include the system command register (COMM), VME BERR address register (VBAR), VME BERR address modifier register (VBAMR), and board ID register (BID). The second volume of the system registration manual explains this. NVRAM can be used to store system data by accessing the CPU, under power-off conditions (bytes $D800E – $D8017 are system registers).

SBC based on Pentium III processors includes special input/output instructions to access I/O peripherals residing in the I/O addressing space (along with the memory addressing space). The location in the I/O address space is called a port. When the CPU decodes and executes I/O instructions, it generates a 16 bit I/O address and identifies it to the I/O cycle control line of the processor M/O. Therefore, the CPU includes an independent 64K byte I/O address space that can be accessed as bytes, words, or long words. The standard PC/AT hardware circuit only retains 1024 bytes of I/O addressed peripheral device I/O space from $000 to $3FF. All standard PC I/O peripherals, such as serial and parallel ports, hard disk and floppy drive controllers, video systems, real-time clocks, system timers, and interrupt controllers, are addressed in this I/O area. BIOS correctly initializes and configures all these registers; Adjusting these usually does not require direct input/output ports
