De-energize thesolenoid.The three-way solenoid connects the pressureon thecontrol land of the second stage piston to thevent.The spring underthe second stage piston overcomes the pressureon thecontrol land and drives thesecond stage piston to the opposite end of its bore, seating the second
stage ballseat and sealingthe actuation air pressurefrom the primary stage piston control land.As the second stage piston moves to the opposite end of its bore, the piston
separates from thesecond stage piston seal and allowsthe pressureon theprimary stage control land to vent.The primary stage returm spring overcomes the pressure on the
controlland and drives the primarystage piston againstthe primary stage piston seal.m filter screen protects the pilot stage of the valve and the solenoid control valve
from damage dueto particulate contamination. No screen or filter is provided for the fuel flowing to the turbine.The valve is either fully open or closed, sealed tightly
off.Failsafe PrincipleThe USOV operates with three stages of valving.This design is necessary to ensure the high-speed fuelisolation and maintain the low-pressure drop/high
flowrate valve.Each of thethree stages is springloaded with the force needed to ensure valveclosure.The first stage solenoid valve is a poppet-style solenoid, spring loaded
withanInconel springtotheclosed position, requiring a voltage supply to allow pilot pressure to the second stage piston control land.The second stage piston assembly has a
dualfunction for the valve. In the normally closed position, thepiston is spring loaded to seal pilot pressure from the primary stage by seating a stainless steel ball,whilesimultaneously opening a large vent that allows any pressure from the primary stage to vent through anexternal breather vent. Actuation air pressure greater than 80 psig (552 kPa) is required at the secondstage control land to overcome the spring force and move the piston to the opposite end of its bore. Inthis position the vent connection is sealed by an encapsulated 0-ring/face seal while simultaneouslyallowing actuation air pressure to fill the primary stage control land.The primary stage piston is spring loaded to the closed position and seated against a face seal.Actuationair pressure greater than 80 psi (552 kPa) is required at the control land of the third stage piston toovercome the spring force and allow the piston to move to the open position.
